Conservation Area Appraisal
The Preston Candover Conservation Area was designated in 1981 by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council in recognition of the special architectural and historic interest of the village.
The appraisal plan identifies those buildings, views, and key features considered essential to the special character or appearance of the Conservation Area. In addition to listed buildings it also includes unlisted buildings of particular individual or group value, which are indicated on the plan as notable.
Visit the Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council website to view the full appraisal document and plan.
Listed Buildings
Under the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990, the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport has a statutory duty to list buildings of special architectural or historic interest, so as to identify the best of our built heritage, protect and conserve it.
The national List of Buildings of Special Architectural of Historical Interest holds details of all the listed buildings and structures in the village. It also holds national archaeological data and image collections.
Preston Candover and Nutley parish has a rich and varied heritage and many of the buildings in the parish are listed. Visit www.heritagegateway.org.uk/ for full details of Listed Buildings, archaeological data and photograph collections.
Local Plan
The Local Plan is the borough council’s key planning document and is used as the basis for all planning decisions taken within the borough of Basingstoke and Deane. It includes a series of detailed policies against which development proposals can be assessed. You can find out more about the Local Plan on the Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council website.
You can also view the Local Plan Inset Maps via a separate interactive website which allows you to enter your postcode and find the development plan for your area, which includes policies that apply in your location.
Hampshire Treasures
Hampshire County Council undertook a survey to form a single record of treasures to be found throughout Hampshire so that the effects of both time and development could be known and assessed. A Hampshire Treasure is defined as:
Those natural or man made features of the county which are of public interest by reason of their aesthetic, archaeological, historic, scenic, scientific, sociological or traditional interest, and whose deterioration or destruction would represent a serious loss to our heritage.
Preston Candover and Nutley parish contains features which by definition were included in the Hampshire Treasures survey, full details of which can be found at Hampshire Treasures Volume 2 (Basingstoke and Deane).
